How gym childcare works

The short version: it’s free or cheap if your kid is on the membership, it lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours, you have to stay in the building, and the popular slots now need a reservation. Every answer below uses real policies from the clubs’ own sites, checked October 2026.

How does gym childcare work?

You check your child into a supervised play room inside the gym, work out or take a class, and pick them up before the time limit runs out. At every Bay Area program we checked, you must stay in the building the whole time. It’s short-term supervision while you’re on site, not daycare.

Is gym childcare free?

Often, if your child is on the membership. YMCA of Silicon Valley Kids’ Club is free with a family membership; YMCA of Greater San Francisco YKids is included with Household and One Adult Household memberships; Bay Club childcare is complimentary for kids on Couple, Family, Club West or Shared memberships. Others charge: the Pleasant Hill YMCA (East Bay) charges $7 per hour per child or $50 a month unlimited, Equinox uses paid Kids Club credits, and Life Time requires a junior membership.

How long can my child stay in gym childcare?

Usually 90 minutes to 2 hours. YMCA of Silicon Valley allows 90 minutes; YMCA of Greater SF, Bay Club, Equinox and the Pleasant Hill YMCA allow 2 hours; Life Time allows up to 2.5 hours for kids (2 hours for infants).

What age can a baby start gym childcare?

From 2 months at YMCA of Silicon Valley, 3 months at YMCA of Greater SF and Life Time, 4 months at Equinox, and 6 months at Bay Club. Upper limits range from 5 to 12 years depending on the club.

Do I need to reserve gym childcare?

Increasingly, yes. YMCA of Greater SF requires reservations at Presidio, Stonestown and Peninsula; Bay Club books through the Bay Club Connect app up to 7 days ahead; Equinox requires a reservation in the EQX+ app. The Pleasant Hill YMCA takes weekday drop-ins but requires reservations on Saturday.

Is gym childcare licensed in California?

Generally not as daycare. In-Shape Fitness, for example, states that it is not a licensed daycare and is exempt from licensing under California Health & Safety Code section 1596.792, which is why a parent must stay on the premises.

Will staff change diapers or help with the bathroom?

Not always. YMCA of Greater SF says YKids staff won’t change diapers or clothing or help in the bathroom; they will find you. Ask your club before your first visit.

Can I bring snacks?

It depends. YMCA of Greater SF allows parent-provided, nut-free snacks that aren’t a choking hazard. Ask your club about its policy.

What if my child is sick?

Expect to be turned away. YMCA of Greater SF won’t accept children with symptoms like a runny nose, sore throat, cough, vomiting, diarrhea or head lice.
